Dame Helen Mirren was announced as the newest UK ambassador for the French brand, L’Oréal and is going to join youngsters:pop singer Cheryl Fernandez-Versini (31) and model Lara Stone (30) who are more than half her age. We have reason to trust that the 69 year old Oscar winning actress will be able to stand her ground. The decision that L’Oréal made places the actressnext to other 50-plus celebrities that have recently gone through the same path, most notably Charlotte Rampling for Nars and Jessica Lange for Marc Jacobs.
It is admirable how this all come to be, considering how in the 1990’s Isabella Rossellini got the boot because she was too old and that is saying something since she was barely 40 at the time. Fortunately, brands like L’Oréal have realized that it’s hard to promote products for mature women without using the same.
Having become the ambassador, the critically acclaimed actress was able to change the previous, anti-age approach that we’ve all been used to previously. Having someone as Helen Mirren as the face is a refreshment as she is one of the rare celebrities that celebrates ageing and is seen as a genuine and likeable person. She had only good words to say after having landed the job: “I am truly delighted to become an ambassador and join such an impressive group of high-achievers. I am not gorgeous, I never was, but I was always OK-looking and I’m keen to stay that way.I hope I can inspire other women towards greater confidence by making the most of their natural good looks.”
While we are 100% behind the actress in everything she does, to say that she is OK-looking is far from the truth. Dame Helen Mirren is glamorous and an ageless movie and fashion icon and beauty. If there is someone out there who has doubts about that, we can only point out that the actress received the Icon award at the Glamour Women of the Year ceremony in June.
