A year doesn’t pass by without films based on Marvel comic books. This year alone, there were four movies, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past and last but definitely not least, Guardians of the Galaxy. The audiences have always been in love with heroes with super human abilities so it is not surprising how all four are in the top ten highest grossing film of 2014. And while we have word of new Marvel-themed films such as Ant-Man, Black Panther and Deadpool, another Marvel movie is scheduled for 2016 which will be named after the titular character, Doctor Strange and the favorite for the part is none other than the British actor, Benedict Cumberbatch.
First talk about making Doctor Strange was back in late 80s and since then a lot of things have happened. Many directors were tied to the project and there was even a rumor about the famous writer Neil Gaiman co-writing the script. Finally, in the summer of 2014 the film got its director, Scott Derrickson and last month the casting call started.
Several well-known actors have been tied to the role of a former neurosurgeon turned Sorcerer Supreme after an accident, and these include Jared Leto, Ethan Hawke, Keanu Reeves, Tom Hardy, and Ryan Gosling. Joaquin Phoenix was even rumored to be in negotiations for the character, but dropped out due to sequels that were supposed to follow.
The internet welcomed the possibility of casting Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange with wide open hands. Cumberbatch, who is famous all over the world as Sherlock Holmes, the part which enabled him to receive an Emmy, has a large fan base, better known as Cumberbitches would definitely be a great asset for the upcoming film. The reason why Cumberbatch would be unable to do the role could be because of his conflicting schedule. We sincerely hope that everything works out for the British actor and that he lands the role of the famous sorcerer.
