One of the most anticipated movies of 2015 had premiered at the Berlin Film Festival on Wednesday night and it was received with mixed reactions. Fans were completely heads over heels for it while the critics were on the other side of the specter. Even if you hadn’t read the book you’re probably well acquainted with it by now. What first started off as ‘Twilight’ fanfiction ended up as the bestselling book in Britain, beating the J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows.
Dubbed as ‘mommy porn’ while the book was highly accepted by the fans it was met with the utmost criticism. Naturally once the rumors about the movie began circulating, everyone just went crazy. Well-known actors were mentioned for the roles of Mr. Grey and Anastasia Steele but they eventually wound up in the hands of Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, respectively. There was even more hype once the first trailer was released, but it all exploded with the first international premiere.
In total there were three screenings shown that day with the first two being reserved for the press. Sam Taylor-Johnson’s adaptation of E. L. James’s novel was met with negative criticism and best way to explain it would be to quote one of the journalists: “It was Fifty Shades of sh*t!”Even before the film came out there was a lot of talk how the book glamorized domestic violence and how it was picturing BDSM in the wrong way. Apparently the only well received part of the movie was Johnson’s acting, but it was not enough to save the film.
On the other side, hundreds of fans showed up for the red carpet event to see Dornan and Johnson, they were ecstatic as they showed their appreciation for the stars with their copy of the book and banners with the leads on them. The one thing that could clearly be noticed was the male female ration in attendance, naturally the later outnumbered since Mr. Grey became the new Edward Cullen. With the books faithful fans, it would be a surprise to see it fail at the box office; as a matter of fact, several online ticket sites have stated that they experienced a record in advance sales.
Happy Valentine’s Day and if you’re planning on watching 50 Shades of Grey there is one thing I can tell you; Mr. Grey would like to see you now.
