On Sunday, the 25th, the stars of television and film got together at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles for the 21st time to celebrate the exceptional performances of their fellow actors and actresses. Unlike the other award ceremonies, the SAG awards go without a host, but that doesn’t make it any less interesting or entertaining.
The cast of “Birdman” managed to snatch the award of the night, the one for the outstanding ensemble in a motion picture and Michael Keaton didn’t try to hide his feelings about his cast members being honored. “This is very very exciting. It’s the ultimate team sport, what we do for a living. These guys are unbelievable, every time I turn around I ran into another tremendous actor.” While the cast accepted their award, there was also a minor mishap as actress Naomi Watts tripped over Emma Stone’s dress, fortunately she didn’t kiss the floor, but Stone’s reaction was priceless, a mix of horror and surprise as she felt apologetic.
It is a well-known fact that the SAG awards and the Golden Globes are an indication of what’s to happen next month at the Oscar’s. Seeing that the two shared the same choices for the lead and supporting actors and actresses, it is safe to say that Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”), Julianne Moore (“Still Alice”), J. K. Simmons(“Whiplash”) and Patricia Arquette (“Boyhood”) have sealed the deal for the golden statue. The best motion picture dangles in the air and it seems like it will be a battle between “Boyhood” which took the win at the Golden Globes and “Birdman” which won the SAG award for outstanding ensemble.
As for the television portion of the awards, there is no doubt that Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” was partying hard yesterday after snatching the award for the best comedy ensemble cast and UzoAduba receiving the award for the supporting actress.
William H. Macy who everyone seems to forget when awards are being given managed to shine last night as he was honored as the best actor in a comedy for starring in “Shameless”. The star gave a speechthat started of great, before he went on to call out the losers“I’ve written so many great acceptance speeches that I never got to give. But not tonight! To my fellow nominees…yeah, forget it, you lost.”
Winners aside, it’s time to take a minute to appreciate all those red carpet looks. Many stars shined in their gowns, while some others were not as impressive. We definitely need to give a shout out to future mom Keira Knightly who looked divine in her purple Erdem gown. Julianne Moore absolutely looked stunning in her emerald green dress, paired with the color of her hair, it was a massive hit. Emma Stone took a risk with Dior Couture, but it was definitely a good risk. Lupita Nyong’o opted for a colorful and stripe pattern version as she donned Elie Saab. As for those who failed to impress, Rashida Jones wore a gown that could be described as a summer vacation dress, while Amanda Peet’s dress didn’t look flattering on her at all.
